in this country, nor any extension of his leave, unless he produces such certificate.

to Imperial audit, should also leave their address at the office of the Comptroller and

Anditor-General.

Extract from Colonial Office Circular of 17th August, 1883.

Any Officer who IDRY

desire to forego a portion of his leave must obtain the previous

permission of the Governor, or, if in Europe, must apply to the Secretary of State for

permission to do so in sufficient time to allow of at least one clear month's notice being

given to the Governor, should the Secretary of State approve; and on his arrival in the

Colony, it must be understood that he cannot claim as a right to resume his own appoint-

ment before the expiration of his original leave, but must place himself at the orders of

the Governor, who will make such arrangements for bis re-employment and for his

eventual resumption of the duties of his office as may be found possible.

Extract from Circular No. 5 of 11th March, 1891.

In cases of application for extension of leave, except on the ground of ill-health

or very exceptional circumstances, the application will not be complied with without a reference to the Governor. Every Officer should, therefore, decide three or four months

in advance whether or not he intends to apply for an extension of leave.

In cases where it is necessary to refer to the Governor by telegraph, the applicant must refund the cost of the telegram sent and of that in reply.
